CHANGE! A Roller Coaster Ride, Here we go again!

Today we live in an environment of constant change. We look around us and nothing seems the same. No one can afford the status quo no matter what you do, work in the corporate world, self-employed, or a stay at home Mom/Dad. How do we manage the powerful emotions that change sparks in all of us? First of all YOU have to recognize the emotions and discover how YOU perceive and react to change.
Change is never smooth. We often feel like we are on a roller coaster ride, something like Disney’s Space Mountain. Being carried along in the unknown, dipping, turning and rising at lighting speeds. This is often frightening and can be perceived as dangerous. In the same way as a roller coaster can be scary, change is perceived in the same way. Reaction to change can be considered in four stages. Watch for these stages as YOU experience change.

U TIP: Can you recognize what stage you may be in?
  • Denial: Withdrawal, focus on past
  • Resistance: Anger, blame, anxiety, depression, apathy
  • Exploration: Concern about details, confusion, energy, new ideas, lack of focus
  • Commitment: Cooperation, better focus, anticipation of next challenge

U Technique Story- Be different! Stand out in others’ minds!

Want people to remember you? “Be different” suggests speaker Patrick O’Dooley. People remember the unusual better than the ordinary. O’Dooley sold photocopying machines for IBM. He wanted customers to remember him instead of his competitors. So he would introduce himself as “Patrick O’Dooley, Reproduction Specialist.” He got some funny looks, but he was remembered.
Mr. O’Dooley had to meet with the head of a Speakers Bureau. When the secretary asked when he could visit he replied, “I can be there tomorrow at 10:17.” The secretary paused and then said… “Okay, 10:17 tomorrow.” The next day Mr. O’Dooley arrived precisely at 10:17. As he entered her office she was looking at her watch. She said, “Thank goodness! Boy am I glad you are on time. I’ve been a nervous wreck all morning waiting to find out if you were really going to be here at 10:17.”
As they walked to her office, they passed little cubicles and all along the way people kept asking her, “Is that the 10:17 guy?”
Mr. O’Dooley stood out in her mind because he approached a common scheduling task a differently than all the other appointments she makes.

UTIP : To stand out in others’ minds do things a little differently than everyone else does them.
